Chimneys should be inspected at least annually and swept as necessary when a significant level of creosote has accumulated (1/8” or more).

It is relatively uncommon for chimneys themselves to become completely blocked. Typically flues gradually accumulate ash and creosote around the interior of the pipe increasingly restricting the flow and creating potential hazards in the form of a chimney fire. It is common, however, for chimney caps with spark arrestors to become obstructed to the point that the chimney will spill smoke into the living space.

These caps should be inspected weekly for ash and creosote accumulation. These caps should not be removed as they provide protection from hot embers exiting the chimney top and also prevent birds and other wildlife from nesting in the chimney when not in use.

Unswept chimneys contain creosote which is a flammable substance produced as a result of burning wood. Chimney fires can result in damage to the chimney itself as well as to the surrounding structure resulting in the loss or property and even life. Dirty, obstructed flues can result in appliance exhaust, containing carbon monoxide and other harmful substances, to enter the living space. This can result in smoke stains, health problems, or even death.

A chimney inspection includes a visual inspection of all of the areas of the chimney and the appliances that are suitable for the level of inspection applicable.

A Level 1 inspection is recommended if your appliance as been in continual use with no changes or suspected damage. Level 1 chimney inspections include all readily accessible aspects of your chimney and accessible components of your appliance and connection. The basic condition, appliance clearances, connections, and flue deposits will be assessed.

Level 2 inspections are required whenever the existing chimney or appliance is undergoing a change, a significant repair, or if any damage to the system is likely to have occurred. This includes any change in the appliance type such as a gas log or insert being installed in a wood-burning fireplace, or a change in BTU input rating or efficiency.

Level 2 inspections must also be performed upon the sale or transfer of a property, or in the case of a malfunction or event that may have damaged the system. A Level 2 inspection includes all of the aspects of a Level 1 inspection with the addition of any accessible portions of the chimney interior and exterior. This includes attics, basements, and crawl spaces. The interior of the chimney flue will also be inspected by video scanning or other means to verify the condition of the flue tiles, joints, and other internal surfaces.

Level 3 inspections are performed when a hidden problem is suspected during a Level 1 or 2 inspection. Level 3 inspections address concealed areas of the chimney and structure. These areas require the removal or destruction of permanently attached portions of the building in order to visually inspect the condition and all aspects the chimney and its construction. This often includes drywall, insulation, siding, masonry, roofing, and any other materials preventing the inspection of covered areas.
