Types of Fireplaces

From the timeless charm of wood-burning stoves to the convenience of gas, pellet, and electric models, today’s fireplaces offer something for every home and style. Explore each type below to find the perfect balance of warmth, efficiency, and design for your space.

Fireplaces

FIREPLACES

Many different types of fireplaces are available. They include open decorative fireplaces and those that are highly efficient, sealed combustion appliances. They can use a variety of fuel sources. In Flagstaff and Northern Arizona, these fuels are typically cordwood, wood pellets, natural and liquid propane gases, and some are even electric. These appliances can add ambiance and heat to nearly any indoor or outdoor living spaces.

Inserts

INSERTS

A fireplace insert is a special type of hearth appliance designed for installation within an existing wood-burning fireplace. These are typically controlled combustion high-efficiency wood appliances, direct-vent gas appliances, or pellet-burning appliances. Fireplace inserts must be vented through the existing chimney using an approved liner system. Ventless inserts are not approved in the Flagstaff area.

Stoves

STOVES

Stoves are typically free-standing, closed combustion appliances installed to add heat and ambiance to an indoor living space. They typically burn cordwood, gas, or wood pellets.

Fireplaces By Heat Source

From cozy wood-burning classics to sleek electric designs, every heat source brings its own kind of warmth and charm. Explore the options below to find the perfect fit for your home and the way you live.

Gas Fireplace

GAS

Gas fireplaces and stoves are popular for their realistic flames and easy operation. They provide warmth and ambiance without the maintenance or mess of other fuels. Options range from decorative gas logs in existing fireplaces to efficient, thermostatically controlled heaters with designs that fit any style—from classic logs to sleek, modern fire-art displays.

Pellet Stove

PELLET

Pellet stoves are biofuel appliances that burn a pelletized wood fuel. These stoves allow you to burn a renewable fuel that you can store on-site like cordwood, but have automatic ignition systems and thermostat capability. They are also cleaner-burning appliances and require less user interaction when in operation.

Wood Fireplace

WOOD

Wood stoves and fireplaces are designed to utilize traditional cordwood for heat and ambiance. These appliances can be large open-front fireplaces primarily intended for large flame presentation. They can also be closed, controlled combustion stoves designed for highly efficient long-duration burns and steady heating.

Electric Fireplace

ELECTRIC

Electric fireplaces and stoves have recently seen an increase in popularity. New electric appliances can have realistic log designs, glass crystals, or many other media options. Many have integrated electric heaters making them well suited for providing an attractive supplemental heat source for smaller spaces.

HomCo Fireplace Installation FAQ

What types of fireplaces do you install?

We install a wide range of fireplaces — including gas, pellet, wood-burning, and electric models — so you can choose the perfect option for your space, lifestyle, and heat needs. Our team can help you select the right size, fuel type, and style for your home.

Do I need a chimney for a gas or electric fireplace?

Not necessarily. Many gas and electric fireplaces are vent-free or use direct-vent systems that don’t require a traditional chimney. Our experts can assess your space and recommend the best setup for safety, efficiency, and local building codes.

How long does a fireplace installation take?

Most installations take one to two days once your materials and permits are ready. More complex projects, like custom builds or remodels, may take a little longer — but we’ll provide a clear timeline before the work begins.

Can you help with permits or inspections?

Yes! We’ll help coordinate any necessary permits, inspections, and paperwork required by local building authorities. Our goal is to make your installation process simple, safe, and compliant from start to finish.

What’s the difference between gas, pellet, and wood-burning fireplaces?

Each has its own benefits. Gas fireplaces offer convenience and consistent heat with minimal maintenance. Pellet models use renewable fuel and provide steady, thermostat-controlled warmth. Wood-burning fireplaces deliver that classic crackle and aroma, perfect for those who love a traditional flame experience.

Do you service fireplaces after installation?

Yes — we work with trusted local service professionals to provide maintenance, inspections, and repairs. Keeping your fireplace clean and tuned ensures safe operation and efficient performance year after year.
