Window Screen Repair & Replacement

You might know by now, but for those who don't, not all window screens are the same! They are either permanent or removable. They also vary in size based on the style of window, such as half or full size screens, which determine how they fit or are removed from a window opening.

There are four primary types of window screen problems:

#1 Mesh

Mesh issues include tears, small holes, frayed edges, and weak mesh from age.

#2 Fit

Fit problems show up as gaps between the frame of the screen and the frame of the window, screens that rattle in the wind, screens that bow out, or screens that no longer fit flush with the opening.

#3 Hardware

Hardware problems are caused by bent or broken springs, broken clips, pull tabs, and plungers, or any other hardware component that causes the frame to no longer be square.

#4 Weathered

Lastly, wear from weathering causes the mesh to discolor, corrode, and become weak.

Standard sizes are usually the basis for measuring, yet many windows vary according to siding materials and even by individual builders. To measure properly, be sure to include the width and height of the screen itself, including frame thickness and corner style.

DIY rescreening an old screen can be easy enough for handy-men and -women; however, equal tension and the proper spline size can sometimes be problematic.

Removal and reinstallation is normally something homeowners can do, if you know the type or style of release for the screen. However, forcibly removing a screen will often bend the frame and possibly damage the vinyl finish of your window.

If you cannot remove your screen, consider taking pictures, including of the corners and hardware, measure from corner to corner, and stop by in-person for assistance.

Door Screen Repair & Replacement

Compared with window screens, door screens typically endure greater levels of abuse because people habitually move in and out of them with great force.

Door screens include hinged screen doors and insert panels, as well as other door-adjacent screens. Therefore, where and how each type of screen is mounted influences its method of operation and alignment with the door.

The most common issues are specific to each door. For example:

#1 Impact Damage

Impact damage occurs in the form of a dent, bent frame, or torn mesh from repeated punches, paws hitting the screen, children running through the opening, or moving items through the opening.

#2 Fit & Alignment

In addition to impact damage, fit and alignment issues may occur in the form of gaps, where the screen is too large, misaligns upon closure, and or does not remain at 90 degrees square.

With continued use, the screen may experience closure issues, including the inability to close properly and or failure to maintain closure, which is frequently directly related to how the screen is mounted and aligned.

As a result, high traffic areas, especially around the handle or near the bottom of the mesh, typically show the first signs of wear as the mesh becomes loose or separates from the mounting location.

When measuring, there are many factors, such as opening width and height as well as frame profile and thickness, corner style, and how the screen is mounted (hinged, insert channel, or other mounting type).

Doors need to stay aligned and square to operate correctly, making DIY work on door screens more difficult than work on window screens. When remounting, it's common for the screen to shift from its original position or become damaged through mismounting.

If the screen needs to be removed and reinstalled, it is usually not too difficult to do yourself; however, you might consider hiring a local handyman as the mounting hardware can cause a little bit of hassle and forcing an incorrect fit can create bends in the frame or strip screws.

Patio Screen Repair & Replacement

Patio screens wear out and behave differently than regular-sized window screens due to how they are constructed and the area they cover.

Patio screens are usually considered to be sliding patio screen doors, or large-format screen panels that ride on a fixed track.

Due to their size and movement, most of the problems at issue are different from our typical window screen situation.

The most common track and movement-related issues are caused by sticking and dragging, wobbling, or having a screen jump out of the track altogether. These issues can be due to debris in the track, a worn track component, or an asymmetrical frame.

Over time a large frame may also sag or warp, creating gaps, poor fit, or uneven perimeter contact.

In addition, mesh damage for larger-format screens commonly starts as a small puncture or tear but may expand rapidly across the entire width of the mesh.

Frequent sliding and handling typically also causes the mesh to become loose along the outer perimeter, causing mesh edge wear.

When measuring a patio screen, take note of the full width and height, frame thickness and profile, corner style, and how the screen engages with the track.

If the screen binds, identify where it binds (top, bottom, or latch side) to separate track problems from alignment problems.

Doing the replacement yourself can be more difficult than a window or screen door due to the size of the screen and the difficulty of keeping the screen square while maintaining even mesh tension.

The removal and reinstallation of the screen often requires lifting the screen up and out of the track, and attempting to force the screen bends the frame or damages the surface of the track.

Screen Frame Repair & Custom Frames

Screen frames are the structural component that determines whether a screen fits and stays put when installed. This includes all perimeter rails, corner connections, and any incorporated mounting hardware that is used to assist in fitting the screen properly (i.e., pull tabs, springs, clips, or plungers, depending on the application).

Any issues related to frames generally manifest as fitting failures rather than physical damage. Specifically, a frame can rack out of square due to corner movement, creating gaps or a screen that does not sit flush.

Rails can also bend, bow, or twist, causing a screen to rattle or pop out. Loose or separated corner joints can lead to a reduction in rigidity, creating difficulty keeping the frame properly aligned.

Failure of mounting hardware (missing or bent springs, clips, tabs, or plungers) may prevent proper seating of the frame. Exposure to the elements over time and or age also deteriorates the integrity of the frame structure, thereby reducing stability.
