Psst! Looking for even more creative fun? Download our Young Builders Coloring Book—filled with home-improvement-themed pages your kids will love! Submit a finished page for a chance to win a $20 HomCo gift card each week. It's free to download, fun to enter, and a great way to show off your builder’s imagination!

Ok, let's get back to it!

This month’s Young Builder project is as fun as it is functional. We’re making a small wooden box with a rope handle that can be used as an Easter basket, planter, storage bin, or anything else your imagination can dream up!

Grab your hammer, gather your supplies, and let’s get building. Whether your child is a first-time builder or a confident DIY-er, this project is a great way to practice basic skills while creating something useful—and cute!

What You’ll Need:

  • Hammer

  • Nails

  • Rope (for the handle)

  • Wooden pieces:

    • 2 end pieces (with pre-drilled holes for the rope)

    • 2 side pieces

    • 1 bottom piece

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Pre-nail Your End Pieces

To make assembly easier, start by hammering the nails partway into the end pieces. You’ll want one nail on each corner and one in the center, just below the pre-drilled rope hole. This helps guide the nails in smoothly later on—especially for little hands.

Step 2: Attach the First Side

Grab one of the side pieces (they’re all the same size, so no need to worry about mixing them up). Hold it flush against one of the end pieces and hammer the nails in to secure them together. This step might be a little tricky—so teamwork is encouraged!

Tip: It doesn’t have to be perfect. If it’s a little uneven, it’ll still form a sturdy and functional box.

Step 3: Add the Bottom Piece

Now line up the bottom piece and nail it into place. It should fit snugly between the side panels.

Step 4: Attach the Second Side

Take the remaining side piece and hammer it into place on the opposite side. Now you have three sides of your box!

Step 5: Attach the Second End

Line up the last end piece, but make sure the rope holes are both facing up! (It’s an easy mistake to flip it upside down.) Hammer it into place.

Pro Tip: Keep the holes on the end pieces aligned at the top—this is where the rope handle will go.

Step 6: Add the Rope Handle

Take your piece of rope and thread it through one of the pre-drilled holes. Tie a knot on the inside to secure it. Repeat on the other side. The rope should be thick enough that the knot won’t slip through the hole.

And just like that—you’re done!

How to Use Your Wooden Box

  • Fill it with colorful paper grass and candy for a DIY Easter basket.

  • Add soil and flowers to turn it into a rustic spring planter.

  • Use it to store art supplies, snacks, or small toys.

Let your builder decide—it's their creation!
