Young Builders Project: Wooden Shelf with Hooks
This month at HomCo’s Young Builders event, we made something both fun and functional—a hanging shelf with built-in hooks! It’s perfect for holding keys, lanyards, or small accessories. We're excited to walk through it with you at HomCo this month, but you can easily recreate it at home with this tutorial.
Let’s walk through the steps so you can try it yourself!
Project Kit Includes:
- 3 identical wooden pieces
- 6 nails (2 per board)
- Hammer
- 1 small wooden piece (with pre-nailed “hooks”)
- 2 eye hooks or eye screws
- String or twine
Step-By-Step Instructions
Step 1: Pre-Nail the Wood
Lay out all 3 wooden pieces. Hammer 2 nails into the bottom half of each board. These will help you attach the shelf braces later!
Step 2: Attach the Front Shelf Piece
Line up the larger wooden piece on the front side of the top nails. Hammer it in carefully. This part can be tricky, so don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Step 3: Add the Hook Board
Now it’s time for the fun part—hooks! Use the smaller wood piece with pre-nailed hooks. Align it with the bottom nails and hammer it in. Place it on the edge of a table to get better leverage.
Step 4: Screw in the Eye Hooks
Screw 2 eye hooks into the top of the shelf using the pre-drilled holes. This is where your string will go to hang the shelf.
Step 5: Tie the String
Tie one end of the string to an eye hook. Thread the other end through the second eye hook and tie it off. You can adjust the string to make the shelf hang higher or lower.

Now you’ve got a handy little organizer ready to hang. These shelves are a great way for kids to practice measuring, hammering, and following instructions.
Keep an eye out for next month’s Young Builders project at HomCo. We can’t wait to build something new with you!
