It’s almost summertime, and flowers are blooming and gardens are thriving now that the cold snaps are over and the sun hangs in the sky for a long while. If you’re noticing that you don’t quite have enough room for your plants, or you’d like something small to grow indoors, HomCo has the solution for you. This month’s HomTooling project is a small cedar planter box. It’s a quick and simple project that is incredibly durable, flexible, and a great way to get some small indoor plants to flourish. Mike from the Paint Department is here today to help walk us through how to put together this DIY planter box.
What You’ll Need for This Project
This project has a few pieces, but the construction and layout are simple. Head on by the service counter at HomCo and pick up your HomTooling kit while supplies last.
- • 2 Bottom Wood Pieces
- • 4 Corner Block Pieces
- • 8 Side Wood Pieces
- • Nails
- • Hammer (not included)
Step #1: Construction
First, layout the wooden pieces where you can see them. Get the two bottom wood pieces and lay them next to each other. Then, stand up the corner pieces on each of the outside corners and nail the bottom pieces to the corner posts. After they’re all attached, grab some of the side wood pieces. Put one on the outside of two of the corner pieces and nail that in. Stack a second side piece on top of the first one and nail it in. Repeat that for each of the sides, and make sure that they are even. After you’ve got everything standing, the planter box is complete!
Step #2: Filling the Box
Now, the most noteworthy thing about the planter box is that it is made out of cedar. Cedar is resistant to rot and good for gardening. As a result, you don’t need to paint or stain it if you don’t want to. If you would like to decorate your cedar planter box, make sure to either use a plant-friendly stain on the inside or don’t paint the inside at all and just stay to the outside of the box. Stains are not good for food-bearing plants because the chemicals could leech into the soil and get into the crops.
As for what to grow in the planter box, it is up to you! Flowers are always a good option, though you could also plant some food items, like onions, garlic, or radish. Whatever you decide to plant, you can pick up both seeds and mulch at HomCo Lumber and Hardware in the Lawn and Garden Department, and an associate will be ready to help out.
Conclusion
While this DIY planter box may have a few more steps than the usual HomTooling project, the result is a sturdy cedar planter box that you can keep around for years. It’s a good way to get some growing on, and its small size lends to its portability and versatility. If you want to put together a cedar planter box this month, head-on by the HomCo Lumber and Hardware service counter and pick up your kit today while supplies last.
