Each month of the year, HomCo Lumber and Hardware provides a DIY activity for the young builders of Flagstaff, and for this month, HomCo Lumber and Hardware has provided a picture hanger frame kit ready for crafting. Not only is the finished product super unique and customizable with your own paints and stains, it is also easy to gather the tools and materials to put it together. It is the perfect project for learning, practice, and experimentation. Evan from the HomCo Paint Department is here to walk us through step-by-step on how to put this unique picture frame together.

Steps

Before you start crafting the frame, it’s important to gather all of the materials. For this project, you’ll need:

  • Five Pieces of Wood
  • Three (or more) Clothes Pins
  • Twelve Nails
  • Wood Glue
  • One Hammer
  • Paint/Wood Stain

You’ll get the wood, nails, and clothes pins from the HomCo HomTooling kit that you can pick up at the front counter at HomCo Lumber and Hardware, but you’ll need to get your own wood glue, hammer, and whatever paint or stain you want to color the picture frame with.

First, lay out the pieces of wood with three of the wood pieces laying horizontally, and two of them laying vertically. Put the vertical pieces of wood on top of the horizontal ones. Once the pieces have been laid out, you’ll want to hammer the nails into the joints. It should be two nails per joint, so the horizontal pieces will have two nails on the left, and two on the right. This will total to be twelve nails.

Next, if you want to paint or stain your frame, you should do that before any gluing. When you paint or stain your frame, make sure to let it dry completely between coats. You can layer the paint as much as you want to your desired color. After the paint is completely dry, you can then glue the clothes pins on the frame. You can arrange them however you want. See the video above for examples. And with that, you have your completed clothespin picture hanger frame!

This quick and easy project is perfect for educating children about wood crafting and safety, and leaves enough experimentation with colors and layout to make this project uniquely their own. The completed clothespin picture hanger also compliments any home while also putting some memorable moments on display for both family and friends to enjoy.

Like with the other HomTooling projects, HomCo Lumber and Hardware will also be accepting donations for the Boys and Girls Club of Flagstaff. More information is available here.
