What You’ll Need for This Project
- Paint Scraper
- Putty Knife
- Sander
- Our Favorite Brands of Solid Color and Semi-Transparent Stain:
- Okon
- Messmers
- Zar
- Paint Brush
- Paint Roller
Step #1: Remove Chipped Paint & Sand
The most important step in the process of prepping and staining your deck is to remove the chipped paint.
Use a scraper and putty knife to get off all the loose, flaking paint. Then you’ll need to sand it completely.
Take your time and be thorough, your hard work will pay off in a beautifully, smooth deck that will look good for another 2-3 years.
Step #2: Choose a Solid Color Stain or a Semi-Transparent Stain
The difference between a solid color stain and a semi-transparent stain is that a semi-transparent stain will allow the grain of the natural wood to show through. If you have any questions about either of these, be sure to ask us in the paint department at HomCo!
Step #3: Stain Your Deck
All 3 brands mentioned above contain UV+ prohibitives in them so your deck will be protected from our harsh Arizona’s suns UV rays.
You can apply stain with a brush, an airless sprayer or a paint roller. If you’re not sure what is best for your project, let us help you decide!
Tip: Okon and Zar Solid Color stains are quite thick and will be significantly harder to put through a sprayer. We recommend using a roller if this is the stain you’ve picked!
