Did you know there are over 24 kinds of porcupines? Porcupine’s quills lay down flat, but when it gets scared, its quills stand up. A porcupine’s quills say, “Don’t mess with me!” Porcupines can climb trees and live in North America, Asia, Europe and Africa. They have big front teeth for chewing wood, and Porcupine babies are born with soft quills that harden in two days. A group of Porcupines is called a family! Your unique Porcupine is going to fit right in!

What You’ll Need for This Project
- HomCo DIY Kit, which includes:
- 1 Wedge
- Google Eyes
- Nails
- Instructions
- Paint
- Markers
- Crayons
- Glue
- Hammer
Step #1: Paint Your Porcupine
Paint your porcupine! You can use any color you choose. We used brown.
Tip! Be sure your porcupine is completely dry before hammering in the nails.
Step #2: Hammer Nails (Quills)
This project is meant to practice your hammering skills! If it’s your first time using a hammer, we recommend using a clothespin to hold the nail. It works great to protect little fingers.
Tip! Be sure to use a solid surface for hammering.
Use as many or as few nails as you would like on your porcupine's body, leaving the narrowest part of the wedge free of nails to glue on the googly eyes and to be placed under the door as a stopper.
Step #3: Glue Googly Eyes
Glue googly eyes towards the narrowest part of the wedge. Now your porcupine is ready to be used as a door stopper!
Conclusion
Making a porcupine door stop is a great project to do over the weekend with your parents! The best part is that you can get creative and make your porcupine unique. Paint it, decorate it and change it as many times as you’d like. Have fun!
