What You’ll Need for This Project
- 2x Pentagon-shaped boards to make the front and back
- 2x Long, skinny boards for each side
- 1x Board for the base
- 2x Boards for the roof
- 24x Nails
- Hammer
- Rope (optional)
- Birdseed (optional)
Step #1: Get The Nails Started
Take one of the pentagon-shaped boards this will be the “front.” Get two nails started by hammering them so they are only beginning to poke through to the other side of the board. Do this on both the left and right sides, using four nails in total. Line the nails up where you wish to attach the side panels.
Step #2: Line Up & Hammer The Front Piece To The First Side
Using someone to help you hold the front, pentagon-shaped board, line up one of the long and skinny boards to form a right angle. Carefully, hammer the nails you started in step one so that they hold the sideboard.
Step #3: Connect the Other Side
Repeat step 2 only using the other long, skinny board to make the other side of the bird feeder. Make sure that the two side boards are lined up correctly. The sideboards should run parallel to each other and connect perpendicular to the front pentagon-shaped board.
Step #4: Nail In The Back Panel
Taking the second pentagon-shaped board, hammer in the “back” of the bird feeder. This works best if you first get four nails started just like in step 1, then flip the front side face-down so you can line the “back” up with the side boards. Once you have it positioned hammer the nails the rest of the way in, securing the back to the sides.
Step #5: Attach The Bottom Board
Flip the feeder so that the pointed ends of the pentagon-shaped boards are on the table and the flat bottom side perpendicular to the side boards is facing up. Take the bottom board and place it along the side boards so that the inside of the feeder makes a trough. Next, attach the bottom of your feeder by using three nails on each side; six nails in total.
Step #6: Attach The Remaining Two Boards As A Roof
Now that the bottom of the bird feeder is complete flip the bird feeder so that it is sitting on the table, bottom down, with the pointed ends facing up. Take one of the remaining boards and lay it along the top of the feeder. Use four nails to attach this half of the roof by hammering two on each side. Repeat this process with the other side to finish the roof.
Step #7: Decorate However You Like
Now that you are done building your bird feeder, you can decorate it however you like! Painting your favorite colors or using a nice stain are good ways to personalize your new bird feeder. You can also thread a short piece of rope through the holes drilled into the pentagon-shaped boards to hang up in your yard. Finally, browse our selection of bird feed to fill your new feeder.
Conclusion
At HomCo, we believe that encouraging kids to get crafty is a great way to help them develop important life skills. That's why we're excited about our upcoming Young Builders Event, where kids can make their bird feeders. Not only is this a fun activity for kids, but it also provides several benefits. For instance, working on a homemade project helps kids to develop fine motor skills and problem-solving abilities. And when they're finished, they'll have a functional bird feeder to enjoy.
Bird feeders offer several benefits for yards, as well. They provide a source of food for wild birds, which can help to attract new species to your area. So if you're looking for a fun and rewarding activity for your kids, join us at this month's Young Builders Event! We can’t wait to see you Saturday, September 16th at 9 a.m.
