Kids are interested in all sorts of things and this month’s Young Builder project is the perfect craft for any youngster who is interested in all things that crawl, flutter, and fly! At our Young Builder event, we are passionate about providing a safe and positive environment that fosters learning. The crafts we offer are designed to challenge young minds while simultaneously teaching them basic tool safety measures and handiwork skills. Join us on the third Saturday of the month, July 15th to build your very own bug box!
What You’ll Need for This Project
Step #1: Nail the bottom base to each side
Attach the base of the bug box to the front side panel by flipping the front side panel upside down and lining the baseboard up so it rests perpendicularly to the bottom edge. Using a hammer and nails, carefully hammer three nails through the base board’s pre-drilled holes securing it to the front side panel. Repeat this process to the rear side panel.
Step #2: Paint if desired
Once both sides are secured to the base board you can paint the bug box if you wish. Painting is recommended at this stage so you do not get paint on the screen or flap.
Step #3: Once the paint has dried, attach the door with a screw
Next, using a screwdriver, attach the flap over the hole in the front side panel. Make sure that you do not screw too tightly to prevent you from being able to swivel the flap to open and close the hole.
Step #4: Cut the screen to fit and attach the screen using a staple gun
Finally, it is time to staple the screen mesh over the exposed top of the box. Make sure that the screen is laid out so that it is fully covering the box. Began stapling one side of the screen to the base of the box. Then flip the box over so that you can make sure to pull it taunt and staple the other side to the base. Then finish by stapling along the top of each side panel.
