The PVC Pencil Holder Young Builders Project from HomCo Lumber & Hardware is a fun and easy project for kids. Once they're finished building, kids can use it themselves or give it to friends and family as a gift. With a grownup’s help, even young kids can follow the simple instructions and enjoy the confidence and creativity boost from hands-on learning. Building projects, like HomCo’s Young Buildersseries, also help children develop their problem-solving skills, fine-tune their motor skills, and introduce them to science and math concepts like experimentation, symmetry, and balance.
Are you ready to build your PVC pencil holder? Check out the video below from Rachel, a member of the Service Department team at HomCo Lumber & Hardware, and keep reading for our simple, step-by-step instructions.
What You’ll Need for This Project
The PVC Pencil Holder is easy to assemble with just a few simple items you can pick up from HomCo Lumber & Hardware. You might even have some (or all of them) left over from previous home improvement or craft projects:
- One 2” x 4” x 12” wooden block
- One 1 ½” X 24” PVC pipe, cut into five pieces of differing sizes, as shown in the video
- Glue
- Newspaper, a drop cloth, or an old towel to protect your work surface
- Paint (optional)
Step #1: Gather and Arrange Your Project Supplies
Gather the wood, PVC pieces, and glue for the project. To protect your work surface from dripping glue, you may want to lay an old towel or newspaper on it.
You can arrange the five PVC pipe sections on top of the wood in any way you choose. In the video, Rachel designs her pencil holder with the tallest section in the middle and the smallest sections on each end to create a pyramid, but you can choose any arrangement you like when making yours.
Step #2: Glue Your PVC Pipe to Your Wood
Once you’ve decided how you’d like to arrange your PVC pieces, you’re ready to assemble your pencil holder. Starting with the center section, apply a small line of glue to the bottom of the PVC and then place it in the middle of the wood block.
Next, repeat the step above for each of the remaining four tubes.
After the glue is dry (1-2 hours, or more depending on the glue you use), you can decorate the PVC pencil holder any way you wish, using paint, stickers, or anything else you’d like!

This PVC Pencil Holder Young Builders Project from HomCo Lumber & Hardware provides an excellent opportunity for kids to develop their creativity. Not only can they decide how to decorate their finished project, but they can even decide how to use their creations. Budding young builders can use it to arrange their tools, while the emerging artist can store their paintbrushes and pencils in it. It can also be used as a pencil holder, makeup brush organizer, kitchen utensil caddy, or anything else their minds can dream up!
