Valentine’s day is a special time of year when you get to show your appreciation for those closest to you in your life. As a kid, this holiday is marked by candy and handmade crafts. This week’s Young Builder event is a handmade string heart art project just in time for Valentine’s Day! Not only will the young ones leave with a fun-to-make decoration, but also the skills and experience gained from building with their own hands! This Valentine’s Day-themed decoration is perfect for mom and dad to display around the house or to gift to someone to show just how much they are appreciated! So come on down to HomCo Saturday, February 11th at 9 a.m. and join in on the fun!

What You’ll Need for This Project

  • 1 piece of wood
  • Paper heart template
  • Nails
  • String

Step #1: Place your paper heart template on the piece of wood.

Place your paper heart template on the piece of wood

To start, center the piece of paper with the heart outline in the center of your board. This paper will act as your guide when hammering the nails.

Step #2: Attach the paper heart template.

Attach the paper heart template

Carefully take your first nail and hammer it through the heart template into the board below so that it is firmly in place, but sticking up high enough to allow you to wrap the string around it. A good rule of thumb to aim for is keeping at least half of the nail sticking out. Once you have your first nail secured, hammer in the remaining nails so that they are evenly spaced and follow the entire outline.

Step #3: Remove the paper template.

Remove the paper template

Once all of your nails are secured to the board it is time to remove the paper template. Carefully pull up the paper template to remove it without pulling out the nails.

Step #4: Wrap the string around the nails.

Wrap the string around the nails

Starting at a nail of your choice, tie the beginning end of your string securely and begin to weave the string throughout the interior of the heart-shaped nails. To change direction make sure you fully wrap the string around a nail.

Step #5: Tie off and cut the string.

Tie off and cut the string

Once your heart is filled to your desire, cut the string and take the remaining free end and tie it securely to a nail.

Conclusion

HomCo’s Young Builder event is a family-friendly, and fun-filled way to spend a weekend. Not only will the kiddos enjoy creating fun crafts but they will learn valuable lessons regarding safety and how to appropriately handle tools. A string heart decoration makes the perfect gift for Valentine’s Day! So mark your calendars and join us for a fun-filled day of crafting, fresh-baked cookies, and spending time with your kids! We hope to see you there Saturday, February 11th at 9 a.m.!
